The Institute of Plumbing South Africa was established in 1989 by plumbers. Today the Institute of Plumbing has evolved as the only plumbing body that has become the recognised voice of the South African Plumbing industry. The Institute provides a platform so as to advise on the practice and principles of the plumbing industry. The Institute regularly consults and liaises with the plumbing industry, governmental and regulatory bodies for the discussion of matters affecting the plumbing industry. The Institute is recognised and in most cases have representation on most national and internationally plumbing and legislative bodies.

The Institute for Work at Height Trade Association is concerned with the regulation of, among others, rope access companies, fall arrest equipment and systems companies and general work at height safety.

SATAS (South African Technical Auditing Services) conduct inspections before a contractor is accepted as a member and manage also all complaints received.

SARMA is an acronym for the South African Ready-mix Association. This national body represents all the reputable ready-mix companies, and is also responsible for promoting the Ready-mix industry and establishing ready-mix as the preferred construction material. In brief, SARMA’s purpose is to set standard and guidelines with regard to environmental, safety and quality issues. To be a member of SARMA these stringent policies must be met and adhered to. In addition, members are regularly audited against standards, which have been put in place.

The Skylight Association of South Africa (SASA) is a trade Association which was founded in 1991 and whose membership comprises organisations engaged in the manufacture, sale and installation of skylight systems. Whilst the activities of the Association cover a broad scope, it is realised with the ever increasing use of skylights in buildings in South Africa, that there is an urgent need to address the issue of standards so as to develop confidence in the quality, performance and reliability of skylights. These guidelines have therefore been developed by representative members of SASA as a service to both specifiers, contractors, manufacturers and installers of these products.
